Los Angeles, Jan 12: At least 16 lives have been lost, and over 12,000 structures have been either damaged or destroyed as raging wildfires continue to wreak havoc across Los Angeles county. Authorities have warned of worsening conditions in the coming days, leaving the city grappling with disruptions across schools, entertainment, and sports events.
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the second-largest in the US, closed schools on Thursday and Friday, citing hazardous air quality. LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho noted the risks of traveling to school, particularly for children with respiratory conditions. Schools near evacuation zones also suffered power outages and low attendance before closures were announced.
"We had to evacuate, and our lives are in shambles, but at least we’re safe," said Kenneth, a Pacific Palisades resident.
Six major wildfires continue to burn across Los Angeles County, consuming nearly 36,000 acres. The Palisades Fire alone has scorched over 21,300 acres, damaging or destroying more than 5,300 structures. Fires in Eaton Canyon and Highland Park have also caused significant damage, affecting schools and homes.
Entertainment industry stalled
The wildfires have brought Hollywood to a standstill, with toxic air quality and power outages disrupting multiple productions and events. High-profile premieres, including Amazon's Unstoppable and Universal’s Wolf Man, were cancelled. Apple TV+ postponed the January 13 premiere of Severance Season 2, while Sony delayed One of Them Days, starring Keke Palmer and SZA.
The iHeartRadio ALTer EGO music festival was called off, along with other award-season events like the BAFTA Tea Party and the AFI Awards luncheon.
Sports scene disrupted
The Los Angeles Lakers postponed their home game against the Charlotte Hornets, while the Rams’ playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings was relocated to Arizona. College sports events, including Pepperdine University’s basketball game, were also impacted.
Ongoing evacuations and losses
More than 100,000 residents are under evacuation orders, with officials warning the death toll could rise as investigations continue in affected neighbourhoods.
Authorities have lauded the efforts of first responders and urged residents to remain vigilant as firefighting operations continue.
