Lives of poor people are cheap in Mangalore. The authorities just don't give a damn. Mangalore is a city only for the rich. High rise buildings and broadened roads are to the advantage of those who can afford to move in cars. The roads of Mangalore are not for the common man who has to walk around or take buses. There are practically no footpaths, no traffic signals or zebra crossings, no police around to patrol, no lights, powercuts (whereas the rich have generators)....the list goes on. The man who died probably drank to vent his frustrations. The drivers who drive like maniacs in the "race" to get more passengers are also venting their frustrations. Too much anger around.

It is highly sad and regrettable. We can not squarely blame drivers and conductors alone.Even public also equally responsible.Coz they too disregard, disobey the rules and regulations set by RTO.
What I have been observing for the past one year is(ever since I returned from abroad) our Traffic system is totally in mess.No footpath,no signal,No zebra crossing,no traffic control/rules.Deficiency of all these infrastructures will definitely prompt the public to take the easiest way/route,risking their lives.Besides behavior/attitude of Bus drivers, conductors, auto drivers is highly deplorable. Can't think about that even we can not talk about it.They think that they are kings as long as they are on wheel.Overcrowding in city Express/service buses is another nuisance/suffocation.Nobody can question them.RTO officials are mere spectators coz no way they can
penalize or take any strict action as they are being fed handsomely by bus owners.Unless it is stopped, nothing can be done in this regard.Even concerned departments, authorities, officials, elected MLAs/Ministers/representatives are watching the fun by not opening their mouth/closing their eyes without doing anything in this regard.Because this is politics.Vote bank gimmick.Poor Aam Aadmi(Public) are the real sufferers.NH66 is the major accident prone zone in Udipi/Dakshina Kannada District. It is high time to take a note this and regularize the things as AEAP Udipi/Dakshina Kannada is fast developing city.

I can't understand why the roundabouts are so small in Mangalore.Take example of Jyothi circle,Bunts hostel,Kankannady,Milagres, Happankatta circle, and so on.When high rising buildings are coming up every where in Mangalore matching with the standard of developed countries, why can't our road & traffic department improve.Road structure goes to zero.Traffic moves in complete madness.and the traffic control department is in total mess and people die like stray dogs.Until and unless proper system is not implemented this will go on

If people drink and come under the bus or truck what driver can do. He will flee from the place as he will become the victim of public anger. Human can control themselves. But a driver has to control the machine (bus). I have seen many cases where people just walk on center of the road without bothering rules and risk. Yes, bus drivers rush. But they too human beings and no intention to kill anybody. But a person who drinks and come below the bus kills himslef and kills the life of bus driver and his family.

The Bus drivers ply the buses in such speeds and they over take everything and do not care for any one. Secondly the conductors and the agent in the bus are a big pain for the passengers. They keep on whistling all the time in the buses and it really a big noise pollution. The RTO or the Police or the general public are not at all bothered to correct these people. Without any reason they keep on whistling at every stop and it truly irritates the passengers and the bystanders in the bus stand. Can anyone especially the authorities concerned take immediate action to stop these continuous whistling by the conductors???? Also kindly instruct them to give one whistle to stop and two whistles to start the bus at every stop which we often see in the Government buses of all states. The general public will be very happy to see this changes.

Very sad to read. There are a few other junctions besides this Bunt's Hostel Stop which are very dangerous. Why can't the concerned authorities install traffic lights at these areas ? It is very difficult to cross the roads at these areas even during the day. Also these areas are totally dark at nights with no street lights. Is this the Mangalore of 2012 to boast of ?

It is a matter of great regret that bus drivers and rickshaw drivers are the worst offenders. They drive at high speeds within the City disregarding the safety of passengers and pedestrians. In an attempt to take as many passengers as possible they overtake from any side - and anywhere. It is not uncommon to see three buses parked abreast to receive passengers on Balmatta Road near Arvind Motors.

It is time that the Law Enforcement Branch recruit Civilians to supplement the Police Force so that the menace of bus drivers and rickshaw drivers is kept under control and lawlessness is taken as a serious problem needing immediate attention.

I APPEALED TO THE CONCERNED RTO/DC
SEVERAL TIMES IN THIS COLUMN TO HAVE SURPRISE CHECKS WITHOUT UNIFORMS AND HEFTY PENLTIES ON SUCH DRIVERS TO CONTROL RASH DRIVING, STOPS ON HIGHWAYS, NOT GIVING SIGNALS, OVERTAKING AND ALSO ABOUT CONDUCTORS MISBEHAVIOR WITH LADIES ETC. I DON'T KNOW WHY OUR DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION IS NOT SERIOUS IN SUCH MATTERS AND PEOPLE REPS KEEP QUIET DANCING TO THE TUNES OF BUS LOBBIES INCLUDING FARE FIXING VERY FREEQUENTLY.

It is the total responsibility of the bus drivers to ensure the safety of pedestrians in the city limits. Agreed, highways, where vehicles are generally moving above 70 KMP speed and one can not apply sudden brake if someone pops up and crosses the road. In this particular case, it is the total carelessness of the driver, no matter the person dead was drunk or in proper sense. The bus driver should be put behind bars for at least 5 years and his license should be cancelled. This would help cautioning the bus drivers fraternity.

this article states that: Neither the bus driver nor the passengers noticed the pedestrian until after the accident, as it was dark....... why No streets lights?.
Then Municipality should install streetlights and see that its functioning properly. cancel the licence of reckless drivers.

I have observed that presently there are hardly any clearly marked and signed pedestrian crossings on the Mangalore roads, and even if there are a few in certain places, these are simply neglected by the Motorists. It`s time, therefore, for the traffic authorities to introduce these clearly signed pedestrian crossings all over, and the Police should make sure that Motorists follow them strictly. On the spot fines should be levied if anyone found flouting the rules. By the way, I like the comments by Joe D`Souza and Praveen and fully endorse their views.

There is no value to human life, for only 1 hour they will say " AYE ALPA BUSDA ADIT BURD SAITHEGEYA" n forget everythiong. And about the PCR or INTERCEPTOR nice job by them, they will patrolling the areas all night long. They are doing their best to control traffic, but the ppl can't understand. Even they or us may not be knowing wt happens, anything can happen in an instance. Even i saw that man's body ufff disgusting bro. . .

Most miserable city roads to walk. Builders are occupying the foot paths to store their Steel,Sand,Stones and other building material. People use the road to walk. Beside storing the steel, they also use the footpaths to rod bending operation. Imagine accidently if a rod enters pedestrians body?
This bus driver is so rough in his driving,He almost killed a lady on her bike with a small kid, as He passed a small vehicle on the left side almost on the foot path. This incident took place near Arya Samaj road junction. He was trying to catch up with another bus in the front. Only way to stop this menace is public to involve and call 0824-222-0800 and inform the actions of these drivers, like I do always.
Another question is why the Police do not show the face of dead person. Public will help the police to identify who they are. Already dozens of people have seen the body lying on the road.

city buses ply faster in the city than in the outskirts.no speed limit applies to them. between jyothi and hampankatta speed limit is 30 km but most buses ply at 70 kmph forcing other vehicles away. people of mangalore need to awaken and start taking the buses to task.
