Puttur, Feb 4: The Chelyadka submersible bridge, infamous for frequent flooding, is set to be reconstructed as an all-weather bridge. The project, estimated at Rs 3 crore, was recently inaugurated by MLA Ashok Rai, and construction work has now commenced.
The existing bridge is being demolished to lay the foundation for the new structure, with pillars being installed. Authorities aim to complete the work before the next monsoon to ensure public accessibility.
Due to the ongoing construction, the district administration has imposed a ban on heavy vehicle movement in this area until May. Vehicles traveling from Panaje to Puttur are being rerouted via the Santyaru road, while those heading towards Bettampady from Vittal are advised to use the Devasya–Bairodi–Kapikadu–Kaikaru route.
The reconstruction is progressing swiftly, and pipes have been installed to facilitate the river’s flow. A temporary road has been built over these pipes for light vehicle movement. However, there have been complaints of unauthorized heavy vehicle movement on this makeshift road.
Though the official completion timeline is one year, efforts are being made to expedite the work so that the bridge is accessible before the next monsoon. Local representatives, including Bettampady gram panchayat member Naveen Rai, have assured that pressure will be exerted on officials and contractors to meet this deadline.
