Mangalore, Jan 14: The first of the 160 houses, being built for the poor by the diocese of Mangalore to mark the post-centenary silver jubilee celebrations of the diocese, was handed over to a family here on Saturday January 14 at Maroli here.

Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza handed over the key of the house to John and Irene D'Souza, residents of Maroli. The house was given by Holy Cross Church, Cordel, Kulshekar. The bishop also unveiled the name plate on the house.

The Mangalore diocese will celebrate its 125th year on February 11 and 12. To mark the occasion, the diocese had undertaken the task of constructing 160 houses for the poor, and other such welfare works.

In his address, the bishop said that it was not the first time that the poor were being given better houses, and that various such projects had been undertaken by the diocese before. Citing an example, he said that in the year 2000 during Christmas, thatched roofs of houses were replaced with tiles.

"Now we are building 160 houses in the first phase. The work will continue in the future also," he added.

Post-centenary silver jubilee committee secretary Sushil Noronha, housing project coordinator and CODP director Fr Onil D'Souza, Holy Cross Church parish priest Fr Valerian Pinto, assistant priest John Moras, Guardian Angel Church, Angelore parish priest Fr Mathew Vas and Four Winds proprietor E Fernandes were present.

Holy Cross Church pastoral council vice-president Praveen Patrao welcomed while secretary George D'Souza proposed the vote of thanks.

    Dinesh Poojary,

It never went into your head so far that those who want to convert, will convert anyway because they have fundamental right to do that as per Indian Constitution.

If someone was ready to convert just upon receiving a house, why did you not try it by making use of the stocked gold, silver and diamonds in the temples ? Just mention it - your Brahman lords will admit you to a mental hospital ! They are not interested in who has a house or who doesn't !

I have told you several times start organizations, invite funds and practice what you were so far accusing us to be doing. Se how far you will succeed ! Don't feign your love for Mother Theresa when she is no more - she was thoroughly court martialled on various occasions when she was alive - her dedication and patience never ran out.

You earlier questioned if the houses will be distributed without reservation of religion/caste/creed. You do want problems to happen and then come on streets with your trumpet ? Bad try !

Tell you what - set your priorities - if you want to covert to Christianity in exchange of a house, why don't you contact the Bishop and see what he will say ? Don't simply make noise to convince others of your existence - we know you are there. Walking elephant gives no heed to barking dogs - it will walk on.

    Apoline,

By-chance you have an additional cheek sweetie ??? I ask this because we in Mangalore offered the right cheek upon being slapped on the left. The days are not as they were at the time of Jesus Christ ! We were hit on the left too !

I suggest you, set an example - give your place of stay to a needy and join 'Sisters of Charity' of Mother Theresa and leave us to live our life.

Well done Mangalore Roman Catholic Diocese for the first of the 160 houses, being built to the needy.

Agree with kannadiga, mangalore/dubai, comments saying instead of using the poor better to use NEEDY which is much appropriate. What the needy family require is support to be self reliant. I liked Kannadigas good words.

Dear Readers, when like minded people do some good for the welfare of the community, few will appreciate and some will throw tantrums against. This is the world we have to live in and this virus nobody can take out.

If the dog bark at the moon, light from moon will not diminish. Dog will get tired and go away. Like minded people who want to serve humanity, will continue to do so, in spite all odd comments. Humanity is the true religion which has no boundaries.

First of all I would like to say narrow minded are you people. You are confused what is religion and what is money..

If you give house to poor it is not a problem. But if you ask the poor to accept Christianity in return, it is the problem.

We will not accuse you if you do only humanitarian works..

Hope you know how we respected Mother Theresa..

    Dinesh Poojary,

Who told you Church is a Charity Organization ? Charity without caste/creed/religion applicable to organization registered with government as charity institutions to which government grants funds.

Nevertheless, in the area that the Church I grew up in, public toilets are built for all public to use with the money that we donate. Yes ! We visit our maternal place and do the contribution for the welfare of the society.

Church is a private religious entity that is run by people's contribution or by the income from education centers and other commercial organizations managed by it. It pays tax as per rule but we don't crib that the government is collecting tax from us as one temple-going member did a few days ago but he had no reply to my question whether the government takes away all the money from the collection box at the end of the day.

What you donate is your personal matter and its your prerogative and at your discretion. No external duress or command applicable to it. You can boast if you have established a NGO or VO - when, you got to do good without bias against cast/creed/religion.

Frog in the well thinks it is the king of the world. It does not know about external world.

I have also done charity. I am able to do only minor contributions, have plans for bigger ones in future.

Many people are doing social work. Don't think it is just you people. Are you aware that people from outside countries are doing charity in Karnataka?

I know how to live in peace with neighbors. Did I disturb you or anyone? Did I hurt anyone?

You should learn to respect others sentiments in particular. Hope you learned few values from your elders.

First of all congratulations and wishing all the best to our Dear Bishop and people of our Diocese for initiative in providing the 160 houses to the needy...Roti, Kapda aur Makhan...as the basic needs of a family/human more than he think of anything else. But let us reduce the word poor and better to use needy rather than poor...so that the poor family will not remain poor for ever...these families when they get their dream houses with the help of our own community/Disocese, will also tell them that they are not any more poor and we too try to make them to be independent and not to think to getting things by granted forever. Let these houses will not become only a 4 wall buildings for these families but also help them to come out of their other needs and try to independent families in all their needs for ever...

Good work by Manglore diocecese. Jesus want this type of humanitarian works from us. On judgement day. These type of works counts. This way we can earn goodwill to enter heaven. Jesus saiys what ever you did to the least of my brother that you did unto me. Keep it up. Jesus says I am ready to come but you are not ready. Jesus is going to come shortly, let us get ourselves ready for the rapture. World will end soon. Only the chosen will be taken to heaven. Accept Jesus in your life and save your soul. Repent for the sins now before death. After death only judgement but no Mercy. Jesus said without accepting me no one can enter the kingdom of my Father, however good he may be. There are many mansions for you in my Fathers kingdom if it was not I would not have told you. Also Jesus says it's very hard to enter the kingdom of God. It's like Camel entering into the hole of a needle. Ofcourse Christians won't go to he'll but heaven too is not guaranteed, unless they follow Jesus commands. Our wordly properies, money, bank deposits won't help us to gain heaven. Don't wait for honors here, so that u may be honored above. Don't judge others so that you too will not be judged. Sorry for my sermon.
