Washington, Mar 6: Former US President Donald Trump has granted a one-month exemption to the country's three major automakers from tariffs imposed on imports from Mexico and Canada, the White House announced on Wednesday.
The move comes amid ongoing trade tensions and is aimed at providing temporary relief to General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis as they navigate supply chain challenges. According to White House officials, the decision was taken to ensure minimal disruption to vehicle production and safeguard American jobs.

Trump had earlier reimposed tariffs on certain goods imported from the neighboring countries, citing the need to protect domestic manufacturing. However, the automotive industry had raised concerns over potential cost escalations and production slowdowns.
Industry experts believe that while the exemption offers short-term relief, long-term trade policies will play a crucial role in determining the stability of North America's auto sector. Further discussions between trade officials and automakers are expected in the coming weeks.
