Haveri, Mar 15: Police have confirmed the murder of a young nurse who had been missing for over a week, igniting a political and social debate over the case.
The incident, reported from Haveri district, has drawn sharp reactions from various groups, with former chief minister and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai alleging a communal angle to the crime.
Swati Ramesh Byadgi, a nurse from Masur village, was reported missing on March 3. Her body was discovered in the Tungabhadra River near Pattepura village on March 6, within the jurisdiction of the Halageri police station. Initially presumed to be an unidentified individual, her body was buried by authorities. However, a post-mortem later confirmed it was a case of homicide, prompting an investigation.

Following inquiries, police arrested Nayaz, a resident of Halevirapura village, and identified two other suspects, Vinayaka and Durgachari, who are currently at large. Authorities have launched a search operation to apprehend them.
According to Haveri superintendent of police Anshu Kumar Srivastava, forensic analysis and call records helped trace the suspects. The investigation revealed that Swati had an altercation with the accused before being murdered. Her body was then transported and dumped in the river.
The case has sparked public outcry, with villagers and activists organizing a signature campaign demanding strict action. Swati's family expressed concerns over the delay in justice, alleging bias in the handling of the case.
Reacting to the incident, Bommai criticized the state government, claiming an increase in crimes against women since the Congress took office. He linked the case to a pattern of targeted crimes and urged authorities to act decisively.
Bommai further alleged that the main accused had deceived Swati, leading to a tragic end. He called for stringent measures against such crimes and urged the state government to ensure Swati’s family receives appropriate compensation.
