Mangaluru: MCC cracks down on illegal plastic flex banners, imposes fines

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Mar 17: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has already imposed a ban on illegal plastic flex banners within its jurisdiction, and a removal drive has now commenced. Officials have begun dismantling unauthorized plastic flex banners installed in key locations, including Clock Tower, MG Road, and the DC Bungalow area.

As per MCC regulations, those violating the ban will face a fine of Rs 2,000 for the first offense. If the violation is repeated, the penalty will be increased to Rs 4,000. Further violations will lead to stricter action, including the cancellation of the printing press's trade license and sealing of the premises.

The public is also encouraged to report illegal plastic flex banners by calling the helpline. Citizens can take photographs of violations and send them via WhatsApp to assist authorities in enforcement efforts.

Currently, the ban applies only to plastic flex banners. However, cloth banners and other promotional materials are permitted with prior approval from MCC. Those installing cloth banners must obtain permission by paying a fee of Rs 200, which grants approval for 15 days. Additionally, all banners must display the printer’s name and contact details.

Public can file complaints if they find any flex or banners in the city. They can call 0824-2220306 and send pictures along with the location to the WhatsApp number +91 94490 07722.

Good move, but will be forgotten even before the present flex banners are pulled down. What one requires is strict implementation irrespective of party affiliations, most of these banners are erected glorifying party leaders, what is worse is these are a safety hazard as they aren’t rigged properly.

How can the public ensure banners are placed with proper Municipality permission? It's essential that every authorized banner prominently displays the permission number. While I commend the authorities for this initiative, it's far from a complete solution. Unauthorized banners will continue to crop up unless strict measures are enforced. I urge the responsible bodies to establish stringent guidelines and conduct regular inspections to curb this issue. This isn't just about following rules—many individuals benefit from these permitted banners, and their significance shouldn't be undermined by illegal placements. Take action now to uphold transparency and fairness!

To which whatsapp number we can send the images of violators? This is really a great drive by MCC officials and should a never ending process. Also the fine amount can be increased further to discourage such illegal banner installations.
