Udupi: Paryaya - Schools Closed, Liquor Banned, Traffic Diverted

Udupi, Jan 17: Deputy director of public instruction of the district, Nagendra Madhyastha, has informed that holiday has been declared for a day on January 18 for all the government, aided and unaided primary schools as well as high schools in Udupi taluk on account of Paryaya festival.

The district deputy commissioner, Dr M T Reju, in the meantime, has banned sale of liquor for two days, from 6 am on January 17 to 10 am on January 18, within the jurisdiction of Udupi municipality including Malpe, Manipal and Kadekar, as also Udyavar, Katapadi, Kaup and Brahmavar gram panchayats.  

Traffic diversion has been ordered in view of Paryaya festival for two days i.e. January 17 and 18. Vehicles coming into Udupi from Mangalore and Ambalpady direction should reach Karavali Junction on national highway 66 and enter Udupi via Bannanje. Likewise, service and city buses should move towards Mangalore, Malpe and Kundapur through Bannaje and Karavali Junction.

During the period from 4 pm on January 17 to 8 am on January 18, entry and parking of vehicles has been banned on Kinnimulky-Jodukatte-Lions Circle-Court Road-Diana Junction-Mitra Hospital Road-Tankapete and Car Street, because of the Paryaya procession planned to be taken out from Jodukatte at 4 am on January 18, the deputy commissioner added.

    If liquor is banned, illegal liquor business will boom or people will start taking drugs (like afghanistan, yemen etc) and smooking too will increase. best thing is people do not hv limit on consumption of liquor,, kindly stay away from it!! it's just that dont know how to use it.

    Banning liquor does not make much sense as those who want to drink will do so at any cost. Liquor can be bought and stored in advance or will be served thru the back door as per our age old tradition.

    Hope this is one off case,because if it was christians and muslim leaders asking for a ban on liquor, am sure it will never happen.

    I am for peace and in a democracy all religions shoulb be treated equally
