Trump warns Iran of 'severe consequences' over nuclear deal

Washington, Mar 29: US President Donald Trump has warned Iran of ‘very bad things’ if it fails to reach a nuclear deal, after Tehran responded to his recent letter calling for negotiations.

Speaking to reporters at the Oval Office, Trump stated, "You have to make a decision, one way or the other. We either have to talk it out, or very bad things are going to happen to Iran."

However, he reiterated his preference for diplomacy, saying, "I don’t want that to happen. My big preference is, we work it out with Iran."

Trump, who withdrew the US from the 2015 nuclear agreement in 2018, has since imposed harsh sanctions on Iran under his "maximum pressure" campaign. Despite this, he now signals openness to a new deal aimed at reducing military tensions.

Iran, however, has refused direct talks under pressure but has kept the door open for indirect negotiations. On Thursday, Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that Tehran had responded to Trump's letter via Oman, a historical mediator in US-Iran relations.

As tensions simmer, the prospect of renewed diplomatic engagement remains uncertain.
