Soaring heat in Mangaluru: Protecting stray animals, birds

Mangaluru, Mar 31: The city has been experiencing an intense heatwave for the past few weeks, with daily temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius. The scorching sun, especially between 12 PM and 3 PM, makes it unbearable for both humans and animals alike. While people can seek shelter and quench their thirst with cool beverages, the plight of stray animals and birds, who roam the streets and skies, remains a concern.

Just like humans, animals and birds also suffer from dehydration if they do not get sufficient water. Many have been found weak and unwell due to the lack of water sources. With limited water bodies available in urban areas, these creatures struggle to find drinking water. To help them, people can arrange water sources at various locations, showcasing a humane approach to addressing the issue.

Given the rising temperatures, the department of animal husbandry and veterinary services has issued special guidelines for poultry farmers. It advises providing clean and cool drinking water round the clock, as a lack of water for even an hour can be fatal to poultry. Measures such as applying lime on roofs or covering them with coconut and areca palm leaves can help maintain cooler conditions inside poultry sheds. Additionally, administering Vitamin C and electrolytes can reduce heat stress among birds. The guidelines also stress the need for using disinfectants and keeping a close watch on poultry from 1 PM to 5 PM during extreme heat and cloudy conditions.

To safeguard animals and birds during the intense summer heat, people can place water-filled bowls or containers in front of houses, on terraces, or in open spaces. Scattering grains near homes can provide much-needed food for birds. It is crucial to avoid giving leftover food or contaminated water, as it may harm them. Constructing water troughs for cattle, if possible, ensures they remain hydrated. Additionally, cattle should only be tethered in shaded areas to prevent heat stress. If any animals or birds are found suffering from heat exhaustion, timely rescue and medical aid should be provided to ensure their well-being.

To prevent dehydration among animals and birds during summer, animal welfare activist Tausif Ahmed has initiated a campaign to distribute free cement water bowls. More than 100 such bowls, capable of holding up to five litres of water, have already been placed across different parts of the city, including near shops and on terraces. Residents are encouraged to refill these bowls regularly, ensuring access to water for thirsty birds, cows, and stray dogs.

With collective efforts, the city can help safeguard its wildlife from the harsh summer heat.
