Mani Shankar Aiyar criticizes divisive politics, calls for unity

New Delhi, Mar 31: Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar on Monday condemned the growing atmosphere of hatred in the country, alleging that it is being deliberately fueled by those in power. However, he expressed confidence that such divisive tactics would ultimately fail, as the majority of Indians do not support them.

In an interaction, Aiyar stated that more than two-thirds of the Indian population rejects the political forces attempting to create hostility toward minorities and push the country toward a "Hindu Rashtra." He further pointed out that half of this majority comprises Hindus who stand for secularism and communal harmony.

Emphasizing India's rich diversity, Aiyar highlighted that the nation has long been a land of coexistence, where people of all faiths have lived together with mutual respect and brotherhood. He extended warm Eid greetings to the global Muslim community, including those in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Europe, while reiterating India’s commitment to secularism.

“India is a secular nation. On the occasion of Eid, I send my heartfelt greetings to all my Muslim brothers and the Muslim community across the country,” Aiyar said. He urged Indians to celebrate the festival with religious fervor while resisting attempts by extremist elements to sow communal discord.

Known for his outspoken remarks, Aiyar recently sparked controversy by making candid revelations about former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Speaking on a YouTube channel, he recalled how Gandhi’s elevation to the PM’s post surprised many, including himself. He mentioned that Rajiv Gandhi had failed twice—once at Cambridge University and later at Imperial College in London.

Aiyar’s statements continue to draw attention, as he remains an influential yet polarizing figure in Indian politics.
