Mumbai, Apr 2: In a significant boost to maritime security efforts, the Indian Navy's frigate INS Tarkash, operating under the Western Naval Command, intercepted and seized over 2,500 kg of narcotics in the Indian Ocean during an anti-smuggling operation.
The operation, conducted on March 31, was initiated after INS Tarkash received credible intelligence from an Indian Navy P8I aircraft regarding suspicious vessels suspected to be involved in illicit activities, including drug trafficking.

Acting promptly on the information, INS Tarkash altered its course and investigated several vessels in the vicinity before successfully intercepting a dhow.
A specialised team from the Navy, including Marine Commandos, conducted a thorough search of the vessel, uncovering sealed packets containing various narcotic substances. A detailed inspection revealed a staggering haul of approximately 2,500 kg of narcotics, including 2,386 kg of hashish and 121 kg of heroin.
The crew of the dhow was interrogated to ascertain potential links to other smuggling networks operating in the region.
This major seizure underscores the Indian Navy’s commitment to combating illegal activities in international waters. Maritime security operations continue to be strengthened to prevent the proliferation of narcotics and other unlawful practices along critical sea routes.
