Bangalore: Lawyers' Protest - Commuters Stranded for over Six Hours

Bangalore, Jan 17 (IANS): Hundreds of lawyers protesting police assault on one of their colleagues caused massive traffic jams in the heart of the city for over six hours Tuesday, leaving the city dwellers and commuters fuming.

The protest that started around 12.30 p.m. at Mysore Bank circle, one of the busiest junctions in the IT city's central business district, was called off around 6.30 p.m.

The lawyers said they had taken to the streets as one of their colleagues was beaten up by a police constable Jan 14 for not carrying the licence while driving his car.

They wanted immediate suspension of the constable and insisted on city Police Commissioner B.G. Jyothiprakash Mirji talking to them.

The circle is located on Kempegowda Road leading to the main and inter-state bus stations, and the city railway station.

Scores of commuters were forced to walk, many with their luggage, over two km to reach the bus stations and three km to the railway station.

Police effort to divert traffic from the Kempegowda Road only resulted in snarls in surrounding areas and at one time spread to the city's famous M.G. Road, about five km away.

The situation was highly tense for some time as angry public began arguing with the lawyers for blocking traffic. Efforts of police officers, however, eased the tension.

Mirji came to the Mysore Bank circle around 5.30 p.m. and told the lawyers that he will take action against the guilty only after an enquiry.

However, demanding the constable's immediate suspension, the lawyers rejected Mirji's appeal to end the blockade.

Mirji told reporters on the spot that he suggested that the lawyers nominate one of their representative to hold a joint enquiry.

"If they are not satisfied with our enquiry, they can file a case in a court and we will order the probe by any agency the court directs," he said, rejecting the demand for immediate suspension of the constable.

Asked why he took such a long time to come, Mirji said the lawyers association office-bearers had told him they will come to his office. "I was waiting for them," he said.

As word spread that police were planning to impose prohibitory orders banning assembly of five or more people in the area to break the logjam, the lawyers association held a meeting and decided to end the blockade around 6.30 p.m.

Association president K.N. Subba Reddy told reporters that the protest has been called off but demand for action against the constable stood.

He also apologised to the people for the nearly six hours of chaos in the heart of the city.

Our Lawyers are displaying their stupidity on the road by acting like maniacs. If they are having difference with the police force why can't they drag them to the court. Why they have to come to the street to trouble the ordinary civilians. This is unacceptable the conspirator had to be punished.Like parveez Musharaf did in Pakistan.

As of today, there are more than 500 complaints against Lawyers and Advocates lying with Karnataka Bar Council for unprofessional behaviour. The complaints range from taking money and not rendering service and also swindling customers. Forget about knowledge of law the many Advocates does not know English at all. It is my personal experience that many of the advocates in Bangalore are rowdy elements and behave as if they are a law unto themselves.

    Hi,
Lawyers being the educated selves that they are, surely this is a very wrong path that they have taken.
They should have gone through their association and appealed to the Police Commissioner instead of inconveniencing the public.
Lawyers who public look up to at times of trouble (to rescue them) if are found doing such things what faith will the public have in them.
Kindly any of the lawyers reading this make note and convey to your higher ups to ensure that such a incident will never occur.
    Kind Regards

One lawyer had a rift with a cop which has led to the lawyers bring entire Bangalore to a standstill. People who should be fighting for justice are the major law breakers. Mr.Mirji should have ordered for lathi charge and attacked with tear gas also. If things still do not improve, firing order could be issued so that we could have reduced the number of goondas in Bangalore. Sheer Hooliganism, all lawyers are goondas.

'Yellide Nyayaa...'! Apalling this coming from the justice providing sector- If only they had shown such deligence and determination in fighting for their clients there would not have been a backlog of more than 3 crore cases pending with the judiciary. this incident proves one thing that the lawyers too do not have faith in the judicial system of the country fast track or slow track !!

I agree that this caused problem to the General Public. BUT ......
Nowadays, If one does not protest on the streets , then NO one would bother or notice what is happening !!! If the lawyers would have boycotted the court , do u think anyone would have ever noticed or learned of the issue ?
Egypt and Tunis used the same and even we Indians need to do the same to fight for justice and against corruption !!!.
Ironically , the Law makers are law breakers !! The lawyers very well know that with the current Indian law , if they file a case , it will drag on for 10 -15 years and by then the constable would have been long dead due to old age !!!

Now dear lawyers , do u know how it feels ??

    Jai Hindh !!!

It is a pity that the common man was put to hardship because of this lawers agitation. Why punish the innocent common man who were in a hurry to reach their destination or take their dear ones to hospital and so on. It is not uncommon to see police atrocities on common people. Nobody is there to protest against that. But when it came to lawers they took the law into their hands. They should have fought this out legally and show the common man how to deal with such atrocities. They responded with base instinct instead of civilised legal manner. This is Goondagiri. We are missing the social sensitivity and responsibility. The same attitude is demonstrated by doctors, auto drivers or anybody who has the support of the group they belong. When do we learn not to disturb other fellow citizen.

Lawyers resorting to hooliganism & disrupting traffic to get justice, when other means were available is just JUNGLE RAJ.
They could have boycotted courts, filed cases against police instead they inflicted hardship on poor public to put pressure on police.
Why the Courts are not taking Suo- moto action on lawyers hindering normal flow of traffic as well as preventing common man from carrying out his day to day activities by resorting to this mobocracy?
Black mailing the Democratic norms seems to be the intention of all pillars of constitution.
Now I ask people to file cases against these lawyers for disrupting their movement & livelihood which is guaranteed by constitution.
NOBODY SHOULD be allowed to MOCK THE CONSTITUTION or Hijack it & getaway so easily.

    Indian police has learnt the
    terrible mentality of beating
    people like animals from the
    British police system in India.
But, we can't find that dirty
    attitude even in England now.
    The police officer who acts
    violent and causing physical
abuse on other people must be
    strictly punished.

    But the lawyers acted totally
    in a different rude attitude
    by creating traffic jam and
    putting the public into serious
    traffic problem for six hours
which is not at all justifiable.
    Disputes in between two people
    should't entrap the whole city.

Who will listen to the problems
suffered by the public due to the
    police-lawyer fight?

What a scene to watch? Lawyers taking law into their own hands at the cost of public. It is a shame that commuters were stranded for over six hours. Daijiworld, good pictures. The problem could have been solved between themselves and not involved the public and the traffic.
