Panaji, Apr 3: A significant disruption in water supply occurred in Mapusa town following a major pipeline burst at Duler on Wednesday evening. The 600mm diameter pipeline, which plays a crucial role in supplying water to the area, was damaged during excavation work related to the installation of a new water pipeline.

According to Public Works Department (PWD) officials, the pipeline broke due to ongoing roadside digging. Within minutes, water began gushing out of the broken pipe, inundating several houses, building basements, and a sawmill in the vicinity, leading to substantial flooding.

Traffic movement along the busy stretch was temporarily affected, while shop owners were compelled to shut down operations to prevent damage to their goods. Several traders shifted their merchandise outdoors as water flowed unabated along the road for a considerable duration.

Authorities responded promptly by shutting off the water supply and initiating urgent repair work to mitigate the situation. Assistant Engineer of PWD’s water supply section, Triptesh Sirsat, assured the public that repairs were being carried out on a priority basis and normal water supply was expected to be restored by Thursday.

The incident has raised concerns over the safety measures followed during excavation work and the preparedness of authorities to handle such emergencies.
