Rahul Gandhi's 'Thousands of years old constitution' remark sparks BJP backlash

New Delhi, Apr 8: Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has triggered a fresh political storm with his controversial remarks on the Indian Constitution, calling it “thousands of years old” and attributing its thoughts to stalwarts like BR Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi, Guru Nanak, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sant Kabir.

The statement drew sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused Gandhi of displaying ignorance on a national platform and embarrassing the country.

BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi mocked the Congress leader, saying, “Rahul Gandhi leaves the country shocked and speechless with his ‘knowledge’. He doesn't even know that the Constitution was not made in 1947. That was when the Constituent Assembly started its proceedings. It was finalised on November 26, 1949 – that's why PM Modi declared it Constitution Day.”

Trivedi further claimed that the Congress never supported the observance of Constitution Day and indirectly opposed it. “For someone who believes the Constitution is thousands of years old, the day is meant to educate misguided youth,” he remarked.

BJP national spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill joined in the criticism, stating, “If an autobiography is ever written on Rahul Gandhi, it should be titled ‘Failure to Launch’. He doesn’t even know when the Constitution came into effect, yet he leads the Congress party.”

Shergill added that under Rahul’s leadership, the Congress has suffered over 55 electoral losses, and more than 400 party leaders have defected.

Echoing similar sentiments, BJP leader Ajay Alok said, “It’s embarrassing. Rahul Gandhi, who dreams of becoming the Prime Minister, doesn’t even understand the Constitution. He says it was made in 1947 and is thousands of years old. What kind of knowledge is that? It’s not just ignorance – it’s dangerous.”

The Congress is yet to issue a clarification on Gandhi’s remarks.
