Fatty liver can be prevented and reversed through healthy living: Union health minister

New Delhi, Apr 22: Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Monday underscored the importance of liver health, stating that fatty liver is both preventable and reversible, provided individuals adopt healthier lifestyles and make conscious dietary choices.

Speaking at the ‘Liver Health Pledge Ceremony’ in the national capital, the Union Minister emphasized the vital role of the liver in digestion, detoxification, and energy storage. “If our liver is not healthy, the entire system suffers,” Nadda cautioned.

Highlighting the rising burden of lifestyle diseases, he noted that fatty liver significantly raises the risk of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and even cancer.

“Simple changes in everyday habits can make a huge difference,” the Minister advised. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal, he said, “The PM urged citizens to reduce oil consumption in cooking by 10 per cent — a small step that can yield big benefits in preventing non-communicable diseases and protecting the liver.”

Calling upon all citizens to pledge liver care, Nadda urged regular health check-ups and lifestyle modifications as preventive measures.

The event also marked World Liver Day, celebrated with the theme ‘Food is Medicine’, underscoring the intrinsic connection between nutrition and liver health.

In collaboration with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), the Health Ministry organised a special liver health camp for ministry officials.

An informative exhibition set up by FSSAI promoted millets and liver-friendly foods, showcasing their role in boosting bile production, reducing inflammation, and aiding digestion. Experts highlighted how millets, being high in fibre, antioxidants and nutrients, can help prevent liver diseases like Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD).

Other liver-friendly foods on display included cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower, leafy greens, fatty fish, citrus fruits, nuts, and healthy fats such as olive oil — all known for aiding liver detoxification and overall well-being.
