Mangaluru, Apr 28: The intense heat gripping the coastal region for the past several days has left people struggling to cope. With temperatures soaring, many construction workers are preparing to return to their hometowns, causing delays in several real estate projects, industry insiders reveal.
Numerous construction projects are currently underway in the city, but the extreme heat and humidity make it challenging to engage workers. "It has become difficult to get labourers to work under such conditions, and their health is also at risk. Many workers have been sent back home for now and will return after some time," said Ashok Kumar, a construction contractor from Mangaluru.

Districts such as Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, along with the rest of Karnataka, are experiencing soaring temperatures, leaving residents drenched in sweat. Meanwhile, light rainfall in some parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi has contributed to the spread of diseases.
The scorching heat has increased thirst levels, with people struggling to stay hydrated. "No matter how much water we drink, it never feels enough. At weddings and other functions, guests are finding it hard to eat after drinking excessive amounts of water," said Mutturaj, a resident of Kudroli. Despite the availability of fans at home and offices, the hot winds persist, making even night time sleep difficult.
The rising heat is also posing health risks, with chances of sunstroke (heatstroke) increasing. To tackle potential cases, two special beds have been allocated at each taluk hospital in the district. Additionally, all taluk and primary health centres have been instructed to provide oral rehydration salts (ORS) to affected patients and ensure prompt medical care, according to health department officials.
