Mumbai, May 2: Governor C P Radhakrishnan on Thursday highlighted the deep-rooted bond between Maharashtra and Gujarat during the celebration of their statehood days under the Central government's 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat' initiative at Raj Bhavan. He emphasized that while both states were formed after the linguistic division, they share a common soul and have made significant contributions to India's freedom struggle and national identity.
"The states of Maharashtra and Gujarat have given India many great national figures. Their contributions transcend state boundaries. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the son of Maharashtra, remains a role model for the entire nation, while Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence, rooted in Gujarat, has become a global guiding principle," said the Governor.
He also acknowledged that Maharashtra and Gujarat are playing a pivotal role in the nation’s economic progress, contributing to its growth and development.
Further emphasizing the historical ties between Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, governor Radhakrishnan referred to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s efforts to conquer the forts of Jinji and Vellore and protect religion by establishing a Shiva temple in Tiruvannamalai. He also mentioned how Bhosale Raja of Thanjavur preserved Tamil literature in his 'Saraswati Mahal' library, highlighting the cultural exchange between the two regions.
Drawing attention to India’s cultural unity, the governor said, "Despite differences in language, food, clothing, and religion, India remains united due to its strong cultural and religious foundation. This unity has helped India become the great nation it is today and will propel it towards becoming the world’s number one nation in the future."
During the event, the governor also appreciated the cultural performance by the students of Savitribai Phule Pune University, who presented vibrant folk dances and songs of Maharashtra and Gujarat, including Koli, Waghya Murli, Dindi, Tippani, and the Gujarat state song 'Jai Jai Garvi Gujarat'. The programme also featured documentaries that showcased the history, heritage, and cultural richness of both states.
