Moodbidri: Woman Seeking Compensation Gets Refund of Bank Charges

Daijiworld Media Network – Moodbidri (SP)

Moodbidri, Jan 21: Chennamma (70) from Badaga Yedapadavu village near here, who had lost Rs 155 by way of collection and returning charges while trying to encash a cheque for Rs 1,500 issued to her by the tahsildar as compensation from natural calamities fund, got refund of the above charges.

The cheque in question was issued to her towards the damage suffered by her house due to wind and rain. She had sent the cheque drawn on State Bank of India Mangalore for collection through the local post office, and she was charged Rs 100 by the drawee bank as returning charges and Rs 55 by post office as collection charges, after the cheque in question bounced for want of funds.

It is learnt that the village accountant visited Chennamma’s home on Wednesday and made payment of Rs 200 to her towards refund of bank charges levied on her account. She also was requested to deposit the cheque again for collection, with the assurance that it will be passed this time.  Chennamma had received the said cheque towards repairing her house, which she got done at an expenditure of around Rs 5,000.

The tahsildar, it is said, expressed regret for the above episode, which he attributed to the blunder committed by the case worker, when his attention was drawn to the above incident.

A good news indeed to this poor woman,a refund of Rs.200 and encash of the rebound cheque.A action in late but a corrected one.A punishment,a penalty to the concerned authorities is must,so the incident will not reoccur again.

This is a glimps of the scenario how things are handled by the village/taluk level government officials regarding the compnsation matters of poor benificiaries of government schemes/programmes.Had the poor woman is our own mother/relative how we will feel?
Another pointed to be noted here is she deposited the cheque in local post office which is not a member of Mangalore clearing house hence collection charges are mandatory. However for cheques issued by the Tahshildar for benificiaries as compensation for natural calaminiities are exempted from bank charges.Nominal postal charges are to be collected.
