Illegal fair in Chandivali shut down by police after BMC denial

Mumbai, May 3: The unauthorised fun fair operating at Meenatai Thackeray ground in Chandivali was shut down by Mumbai police on Friday evening, days after the BMC L ward office denied permission for the event.

The fair, organised by local BJP leader Prashant Maurya, had started on April 27 and was scheduled to continue till May 6, as per promotional posters. Despite BMC’s clear refusal, the event continued for nearly a week, drawing large crowds and raising security concerns.

Following public outcry over the violation of rules and lack of police presence, The Free Press Journal had reported on the illegal operation in its May 3 edition. Citizens complained that the fair posed a serious security risk, especially during a period of high alert in the city.

Maurya had sought permission to host the fair on the 1,200 sq m ground reserved as a playground. However, as per BMC rules, such grounds must remain exclusively open for children during summer vacations (April 15–June 15), and no commercial activity is permitted.

An April 28 letter from the BMC L ward’s assistant municipal commissioner to the Saki Naka police station had urged immediate action against the illegal fair. However, no action was taken until May 3.

Speaking to Free Press Journal, Senior Police Inspector of Saki Naka station claimed they never received the letter. “The garden officer from the L ward came to the police station asking why no action was taken. We weren’t aware of the letter as it wasn’t delivered directly. Such important letters must be handed over by the designated delivery staff,” the officer said.
The police eventually acted on Friday, and by Saturday, workers were seen dismantling the fair and clearing the ground.
