Thiruvananthapuram-Mangalore High-speed Rail Gets Centre's Nod

New Delhi, Jan 22 (Agencies): The centre has given its nod to the proposed high-speed rail corridor in Kerala, in a boost to infrastructure development in the state.

The Indian Railways is also reported to have expressed interest in taking up the Thiruvananthapuram-Mangalore high-speed train link on a priority basis.

The Railways had proposed six high-speed train corridors for conducting pre-feasibility studies. These included Delhi-Chandigarh-Amritsar, Pune-Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Hyderabad-Dornakal-Vijaywada-Chennai, Chennai-Banalore-Coimbatore-Ernakulam-Trivandrum, Howrah-Haldia and Delhi-Agra-Lucknow-Varanasi.

It is likely that the Chennai-Banalore-Coimbatore-Ernakulam-Trivandrum corridor may be replaced by a more direct route to accommodate high-speed trains

Vinay Mittal, chairman of Railway Board, expressed interest in taking up the project during a high-level meeting called by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's office in New Delhi yesterday.

The ambitious high-speed rail corridor project will link the entire stretch from the state capital in the south to Kasargode in the north and further to Mangalore in neighbouring Karnataka.

The decision came at a high-level meeting convened at the Prime Minister's Office in Delhi last evening.

The state government has been asked to draw up a detailed project report (DPR) of the scheme, official sources said.

Principal secretary to the prime minister Pulok Chatterjee, Kerala chief secretary P Prabhakaran and the managing director of Infrastructure Kerala Ltd T Balakrishnan were also involved in the discussions.

The 580-km track within the state could reduce travel time from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasargode to two or three hours.

The project is expected to be a public-private partnership, with technical and financial collaboration of the Indian Railways, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and central and state governments. The financing pattern of the project is yet to be finalised.

Mr. Dinesh Poojary & Ms. Janette,

Here is you Kannadiga's thinking problem. What will a kannadiga loose, if the proposed train gets connected with Thiruvananthapuram? Yes, this project will benefit kerala, ofcourse, but what will you loose on that. Instead it will benefit the Tourists from this part and Ayyappa Swamys. Why do you people think positively? Also you people can try same like trains for Karnataka also.

The difference between people in Kerala and Karnataka is that in Kerala, regardless of religions or parties or caste they are UNITED for Kerala. In Karnataka we fight everyone - between ourselves and against all others. By the way, Kerala may not have much of Industry but they have a much higher standard of living and quality of life than Karnataka because of that reason.

We need a strong regional party in Karnataka to further avoid injustice to Kannadigas. We need to work together for 1 Karnataka.

If one village of K'taka is facing problems, all 28 MPs should move together and get the justice done, currently it is not happening..

The TN and Kerala are getting good benefit from central govt because they have their own party and their unity.

people, instead of being rhetoric, should look at the rail traffic. manglore trivandrum has 4 trains from central and God knows how many more from junction. try getting reserved tickets atleast 4-5 days in advance. and instead of suggesting bangalore line (which is highly improbable in the wake of the sheer number of high bridges) we should make optimum use of the proposed services.

All this is happening because we, Kannadigas are torn between languages, religions and politicians and the outsiders are taking advantage of the situation. Our Kudla is no more called Mangalore but Mangalapuram. Our Bangalooru has more Tamilians than Kannadigas. Kannada doesn't work anymore in any railway stations in Mangalore. This high-speed rail connection between Tiruvananthapuram and Mangalapuram will only further deteriorate our present-day situation. Stop seeing each other in jaundised eyes my fellow-Kannadigas and unite now or never.

As you can see the corridors were proposed by Keralites.

They are planning to export all mallus to K'taka and Tamil Nadu since they can't provide jobs to them.

The poor state with no industries at all don't need this much railway infrastructure. It will be a loss for railways.

The Kerala ministers should understand that, only with rail network they can't develop their state. Poor fellows.

They could have considered Trivandrum-Mangalore-Bangalore. If we Kannadigas still keep silent , we will lose everything. It is purposely aimed at not to benefit Kannadigas. Otherwise they would have connected one city of K'taka with our capital.

Our Muniyappa,Krishna, Moily and all 28 MPS what are you people doing in Delhi?

We educated people come to street and boycott this.

We need Bangalore-Mangalore-Hubli-Pune-Mumbai high speed train route..

What our congress ministers are doing in Delhi? Don't have they responsibility for the state people?

There is hardly anything to rejoice for Karnataka. Both Thiruvananthapuram-Mangalore corridor and Chennai-Banalore-Coimbatore-Ernakulam-Trivandrum corridor will help Kerala in a big way.

We should forget our differences (be it religious or political affiliations) and stand united for our cause. This is the only way to get our share of the pie.
