Mumbai, May 13: Tragedy struck families in Vasai and Thane as two separate road accidents abroad claimed the lives of an Indian couple on vacation and a dedicated schoolteacher on a tour, leaving communities in grief.
In a heartbreaking incident, Gerald and Priya Pereira, a couple hailing from Vasai near Mumbai, lost their lives in a fatal road accident on May 10 in Badian, a serene coastal town in the central Philippines. The couple, who were parishioners of St Thomas Church in Vasai, had travelled to the Philippines in search of a peaceful vacation. Sadly, what was meant to be a joyful getaway turned into a sorrowful tragedy.
According to reports from Lokmat Times, the couple was travelling on a two-wheeler when they were struck by a speeding truck. The force of the collision hurled them into a nearby electric pole, resulting in their instant demise. The parish priest of St Thomas Church confirmed the news and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
Philippine authorities have initiated an investigation into the mishap and are overseeing the legal formalities required in such international cases. The Indian Embassy is in touch with the local administration and working to expedite the repatriation of the couple’s mortal remains to India.
In another unfortunate development, a schoolteacher from Thane district met with a tragic end during a school tour to Bali, Indonesia. Shweta Pushkar Pathak, a respected and much-loved teacher at B K Birla Public School in Kalyan, succumbed to a road accident on May 10.
While the exact details surrounding the accident remain unclear, school authorities have confirmed her passing and are in coordination with local officials in Bali to facilitate the return of her mortal remains.
A spokesperson for the school issued a statement expressing deep sorrow at the sudden loss. “Shweta Ma’am was a dedicated educator who inspired generations of students. Her untimely death has left a deep void in our school community,” the message read.
The two incidents have cast a shadow over both institutions and neighbourhoods, where the deceased were known for their warmth, humility, and active contributions to community life.
