Mumbai, May 15: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai on Thursday, signalling early pre-monsoon activity in the city. Residents can expect thunderstorms, lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph in some areas.
The forecast indicates that Mumbai will likely experience intermittent showers and thunderstorms from May 15 to 17. This follows light rains in parts of the city over the past week, marking the onset of seasonal changes as the monsoon approaches.
Neighbouring districts including Thane, Raigad, and Palghar are also predicted to see similar weather patterns, reflecting widespread pre-monsoon conditions across the North Konkan region.
As the city gears up for the monsoon by clearing drains and inspecting infrastructure, these early showers may test the preparedness of local civic bodies.
On Wednesday, temperatures in Mumbai remained near normal levels. The IMD’s Colaba observatory recorded a maximum of 34°C and a minimum of 27.6°C, while Santacruz reported a high of 34.6°C and a low of 26.3°C.
Since March 1, the IMD has recorded a total rainfall of 61.3 mm at Colaba and 38.4 mm at Santacruz.
Residents are advised to stay alert for weather updates and take necessary precautions during the thunderstorm period.
