Mangalore, Jan 23: The first month of the new year is turning out eventful for Mangalore, with the port city having successfully hosted the 17th National Youth Festival, the International Kite Festival and now, 'Bal Bharath Srujanotsav', a national-level fest for children.
 
'Bal Bharath Srujanotsav' was inaugurated at Pilikula Nisargadhama here on Sunday January 22 by state women and child welfare minister C C Patil.

In his address, he said that Bal Bharath Srujanotsav aims at taking the nation to greater heights. "In spite of different languages and religions, children from across the country have come here exhibiting unity in diversity. This programme will bring forth the hidden talents of children and make everyone aware that merely obtaining marks is not enough, but one should also make use of one's talent and be creative," he said.
 
N Yogish Bhat, deputy speaker, the chief guest said that this was an opportunity for all to know the multi-faceted talents of children. "This programme also indicated that the future of this nation is very rich," he added.
 
District in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar in his presidential address said that the government help extended to hold programmes in the interest of young people is considerably high. He called upon the children not to give up the culture and tradition of the nation and said that when young people miss their paths in life, the whole nation gets affected, hence, it is the duty of the society to promote the welfare of the children.
 
Deputy speaker N Yogish Bhat, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, ZP president K T Shailaja Bhat, Coastal Development Authority chairman B Nagaraj Shetty, DC Dr Channappa Gowda, city police commisioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, actress Roopika, were the guests on the occasion.
 
Bal Bhavan Society chairperson Sulochana Bhat welcomed. ZP CEO Dr K N Vijay Prakash delivered vote of thanks. Senior journalist Manohar Prasad compered the programme.
 
Earlier, a colourful procession was held from Vidya Jyothi School, Vamanjur. Dinesh Trivedi, Balbhavana director from Gujarat who is leading a team of children from Amreli district (Gujarat) said that the 15 participants will perform Garba, Dandiya, tribal dance and Deep Nrithya and will display three exhibitions on water and tree. Mahathma Gandhiji’s picture will be drawn using pencil, a skill which their troupe had already exhibited in a children's day programme held last year at Rastrapathi Bhavan.

A team from Daman with six student performers and three escorts will perform a Portuguese dance. A team from Kerala led by its chief Perman Dilip said that their troupe has award winning tabla, violin, keyboard and mridanga artistes.
 
All through the procession, drinking water was supplied. However, children were seen complaining about the long distance of procession as it was about a two-km distance from Vamanjur to Pilikula park.
