Mangalore: National Seminar on Advances in Chemical Sciences Inaugurated

Mangalore, Jan 23: A national seminar on 'Recent advances in chemical sciences' organized by the department of chemistry, St Aloysius College was inaugurated at the Eric Mathias Auditorium here on Monday January 23.

Dr B S Sherigar, former vice-chancellor, Kuvempu University, Shimoga, the chief guest inaugurated the seminar. Speaking on the occasion, he said that ICT technology should not dampen the basic research in fast growing days. Mere 6,000 post graduates being produced in the country per year itself indicates that we need to expand our activities to reach the scenario in foreign countries where it is 30,000 per year. Teachers should be open minded and should take part in these kind of workshops, seminars he stressed.
































In his presidential address Fr Swebert D’Silva, principal said that in our country only 7 to 8 % youngsters get PG level education, this should be considered he said and added more and more research should happen in the country.

Students from various colleges, research scholars, post graduate students are part of this two-day seminar.

The first session ‘Fuel Cells’ was taken up by Dr A Nithyananda Shetty, professor of chemistry, National Institute of Technology, Surathkal in the morning from 8.30 am to 9.30 am.

There are various sessions on topics like ‘designing organic synthesis’ by Dr S Kabilan, professor of organic chemistry, Annamalai University, Annamalai Nagar, 2D Nanomaterials: Graphene and its Inorganic Cousins by Dr Michael Rajamathi, associate professor of chemistry, St Joseph’s College, Bangalore on the first day.

Fr Denzil Lobo, Dr Ivan Pinto, Dr Richard Gonsalves, Dr Ronald Nazreth among others were present.
