New Delhi, May 27: India is rapidly advancing toward energy self-reliance, with green hydrogen playing a central role in the country’s sustainable future, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said on Tuesday.
In a post on social media platform X, Puri highlighted the importance of reducing the country’s hefty energy import bill, which currently stands at $150 billion annually. He emphasized that a significant drop in global green hydrogen prices could spark a transformative revolution in clean energy for India.
“Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership, India is poised for a green revolution that will shape a self-reliant energy future,” Puri wrote.

India has already made substantial progress in green hydrogen development, allocating 862,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) production capacity across 19 companies, and awarding 3,000 MW of electrolyser manufacturing capacity to 15 firms.
Pilot initiatives have been launched in the steel, mobility, and shipping sectors, and the country has installed more than 223 GW of renewable energy capacity — including 108 GW from solar and 51 GW from wind — placing India among the world’s fastest-growing renewable energy markets.
To accelerate this shift, the government launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission in 2023 with a $2.4 billion initial allocation. The mission targets:
• 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen production annually by 2030
• Averting nearly 50 million metric tonnes of CO2 emissions per year
• Attracting approximately $100 billion in investments
• Creating over 600,000 green jobs
In a crucial step to boost credibility and transparency, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, recently launched the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme, aimed at setting rigorous standards for certifying green hydrogen production.
With policy backing, industrial participation, and global collaboration, India’s green energy ambitions appear firmly on track toward a cleaner, more secure energy future.
