Kasargod, Jan 24:
Religious leaders and devotees on Tuesday January 24 carried out a procession and picketed the DC's office in protest against the widening of Talapady-Kalikkadavu 120-km national highway stretch which threatens the existing Kanipura Gopalkrishna Kshetra.

The procession, inaugurated by Udupi Kaniyoor Mutt Swamiji Sri Vidyavallabhateertha Swamiji, started from Shree Sharada Bhajana Mandira, Anangur and culminated at Vidyanagar. Kshetra Samrakashana Kriya Samithi president, advocate N Subbaiah Rai and chief secretary Shyam Nadiga Kumble were given the ‘Bhagavadwaja’ by Kaniyoor Swamiji.

The protestors said that the road widening project would lead to the demolition of the Kshetra, which is unacceptable. They also submitted a memorandum to the Vidyanagar DC on the occasion.

Manila Sri Dhaama Mohandas Swamiji, Odiyoor Sri Gurudevananda Swamiji, Kondevoor Sri Yogananda Swamiji delivered the blessing speeches.

People belonging to various Mutts, religious centres and mosques participated in the protest.

MLA P B Abdul Razaq, Delampady Balakrishna Tantri, Bela church priest Vincent D’Souza, Kumbale church priest Marcel Saldanha, Kumble Jamath committee office bearers Abdul Rahiman, K M Saali among others were present.

    YES MR. RAMESH PRABHU,

    I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU.

IN MY RESPONSE TO YOUR COMMENT I HAVE ECHOED THE SAME SENTIMENTS.

ENGINEERS WHILE PLANNING A ROAD MUST CONSIDER PUBLIC SENTIMENTS AND ALLOW NECESSARY DEVIATION.

IF YOU SEE THE BRIDGE ON AGHANASHINI RIVER NEAR KUMTA HIGHWAY IS MADE TO RUN AT LEAST 2 KM EXTRA JUST TO REDUCE THE LENGTH OF THE BRIDGE TO MINIMUM.

WHEN DEVIATION IS PERMITTED IN SUCH CASE WHY NOT TO PRESERVE AGE OLD HOLY PLACES ALSO?

My comments were not pro or against the movement though I support the local peoples fight.Nobody is regid but accomodative of flexibles. This should be so when all religious leaders are talking in one tone.Road is needed but not at cost of sacrificing our cultural heritage.

Dear louis, I do not know how you guessed thousands of people protesting here have no vehicles!!!!! Also, your statement that the protest is against Congress govt is also wrong. Please check which party Mr. Subbayya Rai who is leading the protest belongs to? Here people have gathered irrespective of their party and religion to save an ancient temple. No one is saying they do not need roads. But they are just requesting to make a small deviation so that temple need not be demolished.

    DEAR MR. RAMESH PRABHU,
NOT ONLY FATHER BUT WE ALL ARE ALSO WITH YOU.
THERE IS NO HARD & FAST RULE FOR A ROAD TO BE ADAMANTLY MADE BY DEMOLISHING AN AGE OLD SACRED MONUMENT.
SLIGHT DEVIATIONS ARE ALWAYS PERMITTED IN ACQUISITION AND ROAD ENGINEERING.
ENGINEERS PLANNING SUCH A DEVELOPMENT MUST CONSIDER PUBLIC SENSITIVITY DURING THE PROCESS.
WE MUST ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT ROADS ARE MADE FOR PEOPLE AND NOT AGAINST THEM.

Why this agitation? widening road is for smooth running the vehicls and avoiding congestion on road.In the city like Mangalore, always traffic jams. Because no broad roads.Just because of The temple way gets shifted people should not protest,to get some better facility we should lose something than only we progress.

Nice comments Mr. Mustaffa, Kumble. Nice to see the unity amongst all the communities in Kerala. Mr.Mustafa's comment reminds me of my muslims friends who used to help hindus set up Ganesh pandals, keep vigils and join us Dussera and in Holi. similarly hindus used to join Urus and muslims festivals and distribute sweets. Those days are history now. Its same here in Mumbai too.

Instead of wasting time, energy and money to organize these kind of protests why dont these leaders sit together and arrive at a solution which will be submitted to the DC. We need religious leaders to take proactive steps instead of just organizing some protests here and there.

Dear Fella Mangalorean, Live it to the Keralite and look at their unity! it could probably a dream for you all as religion and cast becomes a priority issue there. This temple is not built in the recent past but has a history and the only lake temple in Kerala, it automatically become the responsibility of every keralite irrespective their religion will look in to this matter and we shall solve it amicably, please now educated mangaloreans dont spill your bean in to our dish as it wont burn there. Thank you. Having said that the development in the state will still happen by keeping high the spirit of unity!

Authorities to deal with this very seriously. Due to sick minded a few locals why larger public get distrubed daily on account of narrow roads. We have seen whereve a monkey dies we see a shanty hut naming as some temple. Road is more important than these huts.

It is wonderful to note that people express solidarity in such cases like public issues or social concerns to raise awareness. But as the banner reads: “procession: free from cast, creed and party politics”. But unfortunately we see everywhere in the photographs kesari flags. This itself is a proof that the procession was not entirely secular.
