Maharashtra invites public feedback on draft e-bike taxi rules, final policy soon

Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai

Mumbai, May 30: The Maharashtra state government has released draft rules for e-bike taxis, inviting suggestions and objections from the public by June 5. The final rules are expected to be tabled in July.

This move follows the adoption of the Maharashtra Bike Taxi Policy on April 1, aimed at promoting green mobility and creating self-employment opportunities for youth. The policy sets clear guidelines for safe and responsible operation of e-bike taxis.

Key provisions include a speed limit of 60 km/hr, restrictions on service during heavy rain or storms, and a requirement for yellow-coloured vehicles with driver helmets and a passenger-driver separator. Drivers must be aged between 20 and 50, have good moral character, pass police verification, and undergo training on safe driving and gender sensitization.

The policy also emphasizes passenger safety and etiquette, forbids underage passengers, and mandates that service providers employ women drivers where feasible. GPS tracking will monitor rides in real time, with data accessible to authorities if needed. Dedicated pick-up and drop-off stands are to be established.

Fares will be regulated by the state transport authority, ensuring transparency and fairness to commuters. The policy aims to offer reliable last-mile connectivity while fostering a safer, greener urban transport system.

Public feedback will shape the final framework for this innovative e-bike taxi service soon set to become a part of Maharashtra’s urban mobility landscape.
