Aizawl, May 31: One person lost his life after his house collapsed in a landslide triggered by heavy rains in Mizoram’s Serchhip district on Saturday, officials confirmed.
Since Friday, relentless rainfall has battered the state, causing widespread landslides, rockfalls, and damage to infrastructure across multiple districts. The India Meteorological Department reported that Lawngtlai recorded the highest rainfall at 112.5 mm, followed by Serchhip (70 mm), Kolasib (63.7 mm), Aizawl (63.6 mm), and Khawzawl (63.5 mm).

In Serchhip, at least 13 houses were either destroyed or severely damaged due to landslides. Over 20 families have been evacuated to safer locations. Landslides also disrupted traffic, leaving many travellers stranded after a section of the national highway was damaged.
In Lawngtlai town, rescue teams pulled two individuals alive from the debris of collapsed buildings on Saturday morning. The incident, which occurred around 10:30 am on Friday, affected a four-storey building—partly functioning as a hotel—and five other structures. Approximately 20 Myanmar nationals were believed to be staying in the hotel, most of whom reportedly managed to escape in time.
Search operations for missing persons are ongoing. Personnel from the NDRF, SDRF, security forces, and local volunteers from the Young Lai Association are actively engaged in rescue and debris clearance efforts.
In another incident in Aizawl’s Thuampui area on Friday, a 37-year-old man was killed and another injured after a wall collapsed on a labourer camp. Additionally, three houses and a school sustained damage from land subsidence.
Officials from the state disaster management department said detailed damage reports are awaited. Mizoram witnessed similar devastation in May last year, when over 30 people died in landslides following heavy rains.
