New Orleans jailbreak: Families, friends helped escapees, say police

Washington, May 31: Authorities in Louisiana have uncovered a web of support behind the May 16 jailbreak in New Orleans, where 10 inmates escaped by cutting through a hole behind a toilet. At least 14 individuals, including friends, family, and a former jail employee, are accused of aiding the fugitives with transport, cash, shelter, and communication.

While eight escapees have been captured, a $50,000 reward is now being offered for two still at large—Derrick Groves (murder) and Antoine Massey (kidnapping and rape). FBI and state police say several helpers have been charged with felonies, and more arrests are expected.

One former jail staffer allegedly drove an escapee to family and helped him video-call relatives. Others booked hotel rooms in cash, offered hiding spots, or used internet calls to help the men avoid tracking.

Corey Boyd was traced after threatening contacts for money via an internet phone, while Vanburen met with relatives in Mississippi before being caught in Baton Rouge.

Massey’s sister and a former abuse victim allegedly misled police and destroyed evidence, hampering the manhunt.

Authorities say more people may be charged and urged the public to come forward.

“They’re tired, they’re desperate—we need the public’s help to end this safely,” said Col. Robert Hodges, Louisiana State Police.
