English empowers, doesn’t shame: Rahul Gandhi counters Amit Shah’s remarks

New Delhi, Jun 22: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday defended the importance of the English language, asserting it is a means of empowerment and not something to be ashamed of. His remarks came in response to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s reported criticism of English.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Rahul wrote, “English is not a chain – it is a tool to break the chains.” He emphasised that in the modern world, English is just as vital as one’s mother tongue.

“In today’s world, English is as important as one’s mother tongue because it provides employment and boosts confidence,” Rahul stated.

Highlighting India’s linguistic diversity, he added, “Every language of India has soul, culture, and knowledge. We have to cherish them.”

Rahul’s comments appear to challenge the government's push for promoting Indian languages over English, particularly in administrative and educational domains.
