Mangalore: Seminar at Fr Muller Focuses on Ethics in Medical Profession

Mangalore, Jan 27: "Generally, one out of ten cases brought to the court of law is related to medical issues, like wrong diagnosis, wrong certification during admission of accident victim, or even to the extent of robbing the patient," said Karnataka high court judge Justice B V Pinto.

He was speaking as a chief guest at the seminar on 'Medicine, Ethics and Legal Issues' organized by Father Muller Medical College (FMMC) here at the FMMC Decennial Memorial Conference Hall on Friday January 27.

He added that this sort of issue raises the question of committment and accountability of doctors towards their profession, as the patient while going for treatment gives his life in the hands of nurses or doctors. He recalled that his first legal case was from the same hospital, related to a dispute between the workmen, staff and management.
 
Dr Derek Lobo while explaining the importance of having this seminar pointed out that medical negligence is an everyday occurrence, like wrong combination of medicine, overdose to patients etc, and hence this seminar creates awareness among future doctors of the importance of practicing their profession with care.
 
Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director, FMCI presided over the programme. Fr Denis D’sa welcomed the gathering. Dr JP Alva delivered the vote of thanks. Panel session included topics like ‘Good medical practice’ by Dr Leonard Machado, associate professor, department of public health, Manipal university, ‘Legal responsibility in medical practice’ by Dr Nagesh KR, professor & head, department of forensic medicine, FMMC, and ‘Medical jurisprudence’ by K Nikesh Shetty, advocate.
