Mangalore: Government Offers Several Benefits for Families Relying on Fishing - CM

Mangalore, Jan 28: “The state has 5.60 lac hectares of inland water and 300 km long coastline providing ample prospects for fisheries. As many as 2.5 lac families depend on fisheries and the Government offers several schemes for betterment of people involved in such activities”, said CM Sadananda Gowda here on Saturday January 28.
He was speaking after laying foundation stone for the modern fish processing unit, here. The grant allotted for the projects of fisheries department has been considerably hiked in past four years. In the 2010-11 Rs 130 cr grant was given. Rs 100 cr for the construction of small ports under PPP basis, Rs 9 cr for the construction of 2,000 houses under ‘Mathsyasana’ project, Rs 10 cr for construction of fish breeding ponds on area of 2000 hectare, he elaborated.
Moreover the compensation funding amount rose from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lac for the dependent of deceased fishermen. For fisherwomen Rs 10 cr grant is allotted and the Government aims at strengthening the women of fishing community through 2,000 self help groups.
Dy speaker N Yogish Bhat presided. District in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar, fisheries, science and technology minister Anand Asnotikar, MP nalin Kumar Kateel among others were present.
