Shimoga: Curiosity Leads 10-year-old Girl to Imitate Suicide Scene from TV Serial

Daijiworld Media Network – Shimoga (SP)

Shimoga, Jan 30: The adverse influence of television on children is an issue that has always been in debate. Innumerable cases of children imitating their reel-life heroes have cropped up time and again, and despite cautionary messages on screen and censorship, the idiot box continues to lure children. Television has often been blamed for leading children to undesirable actions, and the incident in Shimoga is a stark eye-opener.

In a disturbing turn of events, a ten-year-old girl in this district tried to imitate a suicide scene from Kannada television series, ‘Chakravaka’, and battled for her life at a hospital for a few days, before being declared out of danger. The girl, who was saved with the efforts of the doctors attending her, continues to be in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in the town.

Her poor family, of which the girl’s mother is the only bread winner, is now struggling to meet the medical expenses of the girl.

Prema, daughter of Jayanti from Ripponpet in Hosanagar taluk in the district, is studying in the fourth standard of the local government higher primary school. Apparently, she was fascinated by the suicide scene in the serial and out of curiousity, tried to enact it on her own.

It is learnt that the family had watched an episode of the series, ‘Chakravaka’, late evening on last Tuesday, in which a character, ‘Shravanti’ was seen committing suicide by tying the veil of her churidar around her neck. Prema had repeatedly questioned her mother as to what would happen if this action was replicated by people. The mother had told her that the person would die, and had explained that the character in the series was just acting the scene out, and that the actress had not actually died.

But despite the explanation, the girl, immediately after returning from school on Wednesday evening, decided to imitate the act, and used her veil for the same. Luckily, she was saved on time.

Scenes in Television are interpreted in such a way that they are attractive. When it comes to emotions, it has to feel heart touching. Usually the TV serials are based on reality. For a scene to be very effective on Emotional character Certain acts are unavoidable. Whatever may be the scene all that it depends on BACKGROUND MUSIC to be more effective. Media should minimize certain negative roles on family entertainment TV Channels and Elders in family must classify the programme according to the genre of the movies or of the TV serials. Such programmes must be avoided in front of small children.

Most of the Indian T.V serials leave negative note in every episode before ending, so that it will increase the curiosity among the viewers to know what happens in the next.Whoever watches these serials in the evenings they will definitely go to bed with anger, frustration and with many negative thoughts. Its always better not to allow the children to sit in front of the T.V, instead bring some good interesting books and encourage them to read.Books are the great source of knowledge,it will help them to prosper in their life.

the kids of today like to enact all teh rubbish that is shown on the idiot box.... also there are scenes of students doing well , singing prayer songs ... this is something they will never ever want to enact ... seriously thinking these suicide scenes etc should not be shown elaborately on tv... so that a lot of attention is given to it

Are there any organisations or NGOs to help that little girl's mother. Or else if, Daijiworld could provide some details to send some help to the mother of that girl.

I think we as parents should advice our children to be away from such serials because these serials have no sense at all, they only create a negative impact on mind. I would always suggest children to watch comedy serials rather than serials which are only filled with emotions.

Each and every movie or serial has it's possitive and negative points. As per my view is concern, from serial/movie we learnt so many good things. Now it's totally depends upon children's mind, which point they grasped from the serial/movie.

Thank God, an innocent life was saved. Nowadays, any serial or movie and thier hero's can only be successful provided they have the script containing vagueness, violence and volatile love episodes which will have unrealistic influence on young minds. Producers of serials/movies should consider moral values for saving our generation in indulging such acts.

'Sadly these scenes get pointed out. The positives have a longer gestation period and we come to know of it when real life heroes/heroines speak about it and it's influence much much later when everybody listens'Every rags to riches story has an inspirational impetus behind it. It's better to help children get focussed right away by imparting simple truths about life to lead childhood meaningfully.
