Washington, Jul 11: In a bold escalation of his protectionist trade policy, US President Donald Trump has announced a 35% tariff on Canadian imports, effective from August 1, and warned of further hikes should Canada choose to retaliate.

The announcement was made via a letter addressed to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, shared on Trump’s social media platform. The President’s move signals an intensification of trade tensions, not only with Canada but also with a wide range of America’s global trading partners.

Trump, known for his hardline stance on trade during his previous term, stated that other nations could soon face blanket tariffs of 15% to 20% on imports to the United States. He added that this action is part of a broader effort to "protect American jobs and industries."

In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Trump made it clear that formal notifications were not required for every country. "Not everybody has to get a letter. You know that. We're just setting our tariffs," he stated, underlining that a sweeping set of tariffs on remaining trade partners would soon be implemented.

In addition to the move against Canada, the US President recently slapped a 50% tariff on copper imports and introduced new duties on goods from traditional allies including Japan and South Korea.

The move has already drawn mixed reactions from international trade analysts, who fear the decision could spark retaliatory actions and disrupt global supply chains.
