Udupi, Jul 14: In an effort to promote communal harmony and peace in society, Sunni Yuvajana Sangha (SYS) Karnataka organised the ‘Souharda Sanchara’, a Souharda foot march and Souharda Sandesha programme in Udupi on July 14.
The event began with a Souharda foot march from Udupi Jamiya Masjid and culminated at Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi, where the concluding programme ‘Souharda Sandesha’ was held.
Speaking on the occasion, Sri Vasanthnath Guruji of Jogimane Trust Byndoor said, “When I was invited to this event, I asked if only SYS members were participating or if it included everyone. They replied that every organisation in Udupi district is part of this. My aim is to spread harmony beyond events, to make everyone a model of harmony for the nation. We are all one-one caste, one religion, one dharma, that is Bharatiya Dharma.”

Fr Leo Praveen D’Souza, assistant parish priest of Mother of Sorrows Church addressed the gathering saying, “We all grew up singing Kuvempu’s state anthem which teaches harmony. Each word describes peace, but as we grow, we forget it, and when we forget our anthem, we forget our land and its people. Society is like a bouquet, it looks beautiful when there are different flowers. If even one flower is wrapped in plastic it gets spoilt. Similarly, one person who spreads poison spoils society. God is one with different names. Today, we are fighting over those names instead of living as brothers and sisters under one Constitution.”
SYS Karnataka State president Maulana Basheer Sadi stated, “Our motive is to build a harmonious country. Like how everyone united for freedom, today we must unite for a peaceful society and fight against forces harming it. This programme will also be organised across Karnataka in the future.”
Social worker Vittal Hegde remarked, “Our Constitution provides solutions irrespective of caste and creed. But today, those questioning secularism have come to power, putting the Constitution in danger. Each religion has its holy book, but the Constitution is the only book uniting all. Religion is personal, it should not become public to divide society.”
Amruth Shenoy, leader added, “Whatever religion we follow at home, the Constitution should be our only religion in public life. Without respecting it, no religion has meaning. For 25 years, harmony has been under threat. Programmes like this must be held often to show that we are children of one mother.”
Committee president advocate Hamjath Hejamadi, SYS Karnataka general secretary Maulana Abubakar Siddik Montagoli, advocate Habib, Ramesh Kanchan, Udyavar Nagesh Kumar, Prashanth Jathanna, Krishna Moorthi Acharya, Sundar Master, Shamraj Birthi, Mohamad Moulana, Prabhakar Poojary president Rakshana Vedike and others were present.
