Fisheries minister Mankal Vaidya visits Udupi boat mishap victim’s family, announces aid

Udupi, Jul 15: Fisheries Minister Mankal Vaidya visited the residence of fisherman Neeladhar Saliyan in Pithrody, Kaup, who died after his boat capsized recently, on July 15.

The minister handed over a compensation amount of Rs 10 lac to Neeladhar’s wife and children. Additionally, he announced a compensation of Rs 5 lac to the owners of the capsized boat.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Mankal Vaidya expressed his condolences and said, “Such tragedies should not occur, but unfortunately, they did. Incidents of country boats capsizing have been reported along the entire coastal belt, including Bhatkal, Gangolli, and Udupi.”

Minister Mankal Vaidya further stated that the government has increased the compensation amount for fishermen from Rs 6 lac to Rs 10 lac. Separate compensation is also being provided for damage caused to boats and nets.

The minister appealed to fishermen not to venture into the sea when it is rough and to exercise utmost caution while fishing for their livelihood. Search operations are still underway to trace missing fishermen from the Gangolli mishap, he added.

MLA Gurme Suresh Shetty and Yashpal Suvarna were present during the minister's visit. Congress District president Ashok Kumar Kodavoor and several fisher leaders were also in attendance.
