Mangaluru/Udupi, Jul 16: The monsoon has regained intensity across the coastal belt, bringing heavy rainfall throughout Tuesday in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Minor damage was reported in some areas, prompting authorities to declare a holiday in parts of Kadaba, Ullal, and Bantwal taluks.
In Bantwal taluk's Badagabellur, a tree fell on a house, causing damage. Light damage to houses was also reported in Panemangalore, Biliyur, and Arala villages. Near Veerakamba, close to Vittal, a tree fell across the road, briefly disrupting vehicle movement. Mangaluru city witnessed consistent heavy rainfall, resulting in waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic congestion in several parts.

Heavy rain was also reported in Kadaba, Beltangady, Dharmasthala, Ujire, Madanthyar, Uppinangady, Puttur, Sullia, Subrahmanya, Panja, Kollamogru, Surathkal, Moodbidri, Bajpe, Kateel, Vittal, Bantwal, Kanyana, and Peruvai, among other locations.
Six houses in the district have sustained partial damage. Around 20 electricity poles and one transformer were affected. In response, 15 members of the SDRF/civil defence team have been deployed in Mangaluru, 10 in Subrahmanya, and a 25-member NDRF team is stationed in Puttur. A total of 26 boats have been kept ready.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for July 16, forecasting heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Alerts have also been announced for July 17 and 18.
Steady rain in Udupi
Udupi district received steady rain from Tuesday morning through the night. As per IMD forecasts, an orange alert is in place for Wednesday and Thursday.
Continuous showers since early morning led to rivers and streams swelling again. While rainfall slightly reduced post noon, it picked up again by evening.
The district administration has warned fishermen not to venture into the sea until July 18, as strong winds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph are expected over the Arabian Sea.
Heavy showers were also recorded in Byndoor, Kundapur, Karkala, Hebri, Padubidri, Kaup, Uchila, Katapady, Udupi, Manipal, Malpe, Brahmavar, and Kota regions.
