Raichur, Jul 22: In a bizarre turn of events, a man who approached police claiming his wife had attempted to murder him has now found himself facing legal action under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.

The man, identified as Tataiah, alleged that his wife, a 15.8-year-old minor, pushed him into the Krishna River while pretending to take his photograph at the Gurjapura barrage in Raichur district. Though he managed to escape unharmed, the incident quickly gained attention after a video clip went viral on social media.

Acting on the complaint, police initiated an inquiry during which it was discovered that Tataiah had married the girl while she was still a minor. Based on documents verified during the probe, the Raichur Women’s Police registered a case under the Child Marriage Act against Tataiah, his mother, and his mother-in-law.

Officials from the State Child Rights Commission and the Women and Child Welfare Department were alerted following the man’s initial complaint. Subsequently, Panchayat Development Officer Ravikumar lodged a formal police complaint on the matter. The minor has since been placed in an observation home by the district’s Child Protection Unit.

Sources said the marriage, which was already strained, had led to frequent disputes between the couple. Following the alleged river incident, the minor wife reportedly agreed to a mutual divorce and signed the relevant papers.

A detailed investigation into the incident is currently underway.
