Mumbai, Aug 14: Mumbai Police have arrested a 48-year-old man for allegedly adulterating milk of reputed brands and selling it to customers in Kandivali East, officials said.

The accused has been identified as Iranna Lingya Gopanabai, a resident of Ram Ujagar Chawl in Laxminagar, near the Damunagar bus stop in Kandivali East.

According to police, the Crime Investigation Unit of Samta Nagar Police Station received information that Gopanabai was allegedly mixing impure water with milk at his residence and selling the adulterated product to customers.

Acting on the information, police raided the premises at around 5.50 am on Wednesday and allegedly found the accused mixing impure water into one-litre and half-litre milk packets.

Police recovered 74 litres of adulterated milk carrying Amul and Gokul branding from the premises. Empty milk pouches bearing the names of the two brands and other material allegedly used in the adulteration were also seized.

Following the raid, a case was registered under Sections 274, 345(3), 347(1), 318(4), 336(3) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 26, 27 and 31 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and relevant rules and regulations.

Police said the accused was arrested in connection with the case. Further investigation is underway.

The operation was carried out under the guidance of Additional Commissioner of Police, North Regional Division, Shashikumar Meena; Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Division 3, Gajanan Shivling Rajmane; and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Samta Nagar Division, Kailas Barve. The police team included senior officers and personnel from Samta Nagar Police Station.
