Mangalore, Feb 1: The students of St Agnes College celebrated the College annual day with much enthusiasm and spirit here on Tuesday January 31.

Karnataka high court judge Justice B V Pinto was the chief guest, while Sr Carmel Rita, assistant provincial superior, Karnataka province, presided.

Addressing the gathering, Justice Pinto stressed on the need for women to get into the legal profession. He lamented that there was a great imbalance in the male-female ratio in the legal field, and said that women can bring about a change in society by taking up law as their profession.

Justice Pinto gave away the Principal Roll of Honour to students who had excelled in academics, while Sr Rita gave away special prizes to other achievers.

The students presented a delectable variety of cultural programmes on the occasion. If Hindi play on women's empowerment conveyed a meaningful message, an English tableau on Mother Veronica depicted the life of the founder of the Sisters of the Apostolic Carmel.

There was also a welcome dance, based on the theme of poet Rabindranath Tagore's 150th birth anniversary. Manipuri dance was a special attraction, apart from western songs.

Prof Malini Hebbar compered the event. Prof Elsie Tharian welcomed the gathering and Dr Devi Prabha proposed the vote of thanks.

Among those present were St Agnes College principal Sr Prem D'Souza, Superior Sr Maria Kripa, PTA vice-president Joyce D'Souza, and student council members led by Soudamani Chandarana of UG and Amrith Kiran of PG section.
