New York, Jul 29: A Bangladeshi immigrant and brave NYPD officer, Didarul Islam (36), has been hailed as a true hero after tragically losing his life in a mass shooting incident that rocked Midtown Manhattan early Tuesday morning. The officer was among four victims killed when a gunman with a history of mental illness opened fire inside a commercial building near Park Avenue.

The incident unfolded around 6:40 pm (local time) when the 27-year-old shooter, later identified as Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, entered the high-rise tower with an AR-style rifle. He opened fire in the lobby and proceeded to the 32nd floor, triggering chaos in one of New York's busiest business districts. He eventually died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams paid a heartfelt tribute to Officer Islam, calling him “a true-blue New Yorker.” “He loved this city and lived by his faith. Every person we spoke to described him as someone deeply rooted in his beliefs and unwavering in his commitment to serve,” Adams said at a press briefing.

Islam had been serving with the NYPD for nearly four years and was posted at the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, he is survived by his wife and two young sons, with a third child expected soon—his wife is currently eight months pregnant.

The New York Police Department released a solemn statement mourning the loss: “He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today. We honour his legacy and hold his family in our prayers during this time of immense grief.”

Local reports state that the other three victims include two women and a man, while a fifth victim remains critically injured. Authorities are yet to reveal their identities pending family notifications.

Commissioner Tisch confirmed the shooter had a “documented mental health history” and said investigations are ongoing to determine his motive behind the attack.

As the city reels from the shock, Officer Didarul Islam is being remembered not only as a dedicated law enforcer but as a symbol of immigrant resilience and sacrifice—an embodiment of New York’s spirit.
