New Delhi, Augt 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a fierce attack on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday, following the Supreme Court's sharp remarks over his controversial comments on the Indian Army and alleged Chinese incursions.

Addressing a press conference at the party’s headquarters, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said the apex court’s observations raised “serious questions about Rahul Gandhi’s Indianness and national responsibility.” He accused the Congress leader of "undermining the Constitution" and "demoralising the armed forces" through “factually baseless” and politically motivated statements.

“The Constitution that Rahul Gandhi takes everywhere — if anyone is challenging it, it is him,” Bhatia declared. “If anyone is destroying the morale of our brave armed forces, it is Rahul Gandhi.”

The criticism stems from a recent Supreme Court hearing, where a Bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Joymalya Bagchi pulled up Gandhi for his remarks made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, in which he alleged that over 2,000 square kilometres of Indian territory had been occupied by China. He also claimed Indian soldiers were “being thrashed” by Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh during the December 2022 Tawang clash.

The Court, while staying defamation proceedings against Gandhi, questioned the veracity and appropriateness of such comments. “If you were a true Indian, you would not say all this,” the Bench remarked.

Echoing the Court, Bhatia asked, “Where is the evidence for these claims? Was Rahul Gandhi present at the border? How does he know about the alleged occupation?”

The BJP also criticised Gandhi for posting sensitive remarks on social media rather than raising them in Parliament, despite being the Leader of the Opposition. “If you are serious, speak in the House, not just on social media,” Bhatia said.

He further recalled past legal run-ins, including the Rafale controversy, where Gandhi was forced to issue an unconditional apology after wrongly attributing comments to the Supreme Court. Bhatia also cited a defamation case involving Veer Savarkar, in which the court reminded Gandhi of his grandmother Indira Gandhi’s praise for Savarkar.

Calling it part of a “distorted, anti-India mindset,” Bhatia said Rahul Gandhi’s remarks “undermine the dignity of his constitutional role” and damage India’s global image.

The BJP’s offensive reflects escalating tensions between the government and the opposition ahead of the next Parliament session, with national security and political accountability once again in sharp focus.
