Udupi, Feb 4: 'Spring Zouk', a three-day international level festival of music and folklore, began at St Mary's Island off Malpe port on the evening of Friday February 3.

The programme is being organized by 3W Concepts, a Bangalore-based private firm, in association with the district administration and department of tourism. The major purpose of the programme is to introduce culture and folklore of the land to foreigners and people from outside the state.

In addition to eight major musical groups from international arena, over 15 troupes from the state and elsewhere will be showcasing their talents at the event. Folklore from different parts of Karnataka will also be presented. Deputy commissioner, M T Reju, said that this musical and art fair proposes to encourage tourism in the area, and that it is one among the several initiatives undertaken by the district administration jointly with the department of tourism to enhance tourism potential of the region.

He said that eight international bands have already been touring India and have organized shows at various places in India, and that they were provided with an opportunity to perform here, as a private firm came forward to arrange for the same.

The event also gave rise to questions on the island turning into a stage for fun and rave parties for youth who have come from foreign countries, going by the skimpy clothes they wore, intoxicating substances they consumed openly, and gave vent to their hidden desires in full public glare. A 50-member crowd of citizens of Germany, Russia, Estonia etc, which had been in Goa since the last couple of months, said they had come here to enjoy life without any shackles, having been lured by the claims of the organizers.

As those who want to participate in the event need to buy a ticket costing Rs 2,500, only foreigners and students studying in Manipal were seen participating in it. Those holding the ticket can spend three days at the island, although so far there had been a ban on night stay at the island.

It was a cultural showcase of our tradition. Our aim was to introduce south kanara culture to international visitors. It was nothing more than that. There's always a chance of few people going overboard. That happens everywhere i guess.... The intention was never wrong.

Someone is making great deal of money! Our ethics have dampened to reach to these heights. Honesty, truth, respect is gone with the wind.

Why Indians cry over split milk? When can we rise above cheap, corrupt, unbiased behavior?

What a shame. We need to attract real tourists and not these beggar hippies who come and trash the place. They dont even spend enough and live in tents like refugees.

I neither support nor condemn this program. However hypocrisy of some who are commenting in this forum is quite evident!
    1. Beach program: why worry about the attire- do you expect them to be in formals?
    2. Music and dance of this kind is always associated with Fun and frolic. If people approved the activities of a pub in mangalore ( were hurt by an attack on it), why not approve the same here?
    3. Or is it just the case of sour grapes? I can't do it, so others should not do it?
Grow up, give constructive criticism, rather than giving petty comments!

"seeing is believing",for those have doubts that these tourists are here just for a holiday kindly wake up, their beggar like looks speak a lot,This is clear double standards by the current state govt in the name tourism,So what i can understand from this is, its ok for tourists to come and participate in rave parites but not locals.

We need to have these shows often. We should boost tourism.People talkind about culture etc should stay indoors and watch TV or say their prayers. It is a fact that life /culture has changed in India after the arrival of TV.So should we ban TV ? Should we ban manufacture of vehicles because of accidents ? (I know as to how many Hindu's hide and eat beef, drink alcohol, womanise etc.Lets keep some facts away from this topic). We are all not saints.Even if we are saints then our place should be in the Temple and not on St.Mary's Island!!

The hypocracy about following culture / traditions etc should be kept away.We can't do what our forefathers did 100 years ago, nor do we do anyway.Be practical and lets face reality in the 21st century.Live and let live.

St Mary's Island is one of the best place for the family outings.Ferries take 30 to 40 minutes to cover the distance.Government is doing good job to promote the tourism in the neglected areas of Mangalore. The place needs proper attention from the Government. It is not at all clean and filled with the thrash. The grass is grown so dense one should be careful about snakes, scorpions. If local authorities show some interest then only St Mary's Island can proudly welcome international tourist

We need to ask these basic questions?
    1. What are the arrangements for the night stay there? Do they construction or build temporary structures to accommodate the tourists?
    2. What about the facilities such as as bathrooms, toilets for the tourists.
    3. Whether the organizers have obtained permission for night stay on the island?

With event is Organised with the help of department of Tourism and local district administration - so why would the BD, Ram Sene etc would think of restricting those involved in Rave party as its promoted the Government on power which is their own supported party. Clear indication of these groups being puppets in the hands of administration. They will never dare to attach the foreign National s, as they know it would invite trouble!! to the so called self d saviors of our culture...
