Mangalore, Feb 4:
Chairman of the state legislative council D H Shankarmurthy on Saturday February 4 said that the elections to legislative council from south west graduates and teachers constituencies may take place some time during June 10-20.

Seven candidates each from graduates and teachers constituencies will be in the fray as well. He appealed to every eligible voter to enroll by filling form number 18 and 19 for graduates and teachers election respectively.

Seeking votes for BJP candidates, he said that government colleges in the state were only 158 earlier, but after BJP came into power, 184 new colleges were set up in rural places, which is a remarkable stride in the state's education sector. "Previous governments neglected the education sector, as out of a total budget of Rs 37,000 crore, only Rs 3,700 crore was allotted to education, but the current BJP government in its budget figuring up to Rs 78,000 crore, has allotted Rs 12,600 crore," he said.

Though the Maharashtra government presented a lofty budget of Rs 1 lac crore, the amount kept aside for education is lower than that of Karnataka government.

He further added, "The party is expecting the opposition candidates to lose their deposit."

MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik said that in five years the state has seen tremendous growth in the education sector. Basic facilities at schools were also provided. Pay scale discrimination issue of PUC lecturers also will be resolved by the government by April 1, he said. "Earlier, there were no government technical colleges in the state, but after the BJP came into power 11 such educational institutions have been started," he said.

In his inaugural address district incharge minister Krishna J Palemar said that as the district is known for its quality of education, there is every need to win the election and bring more progress in the sector. He pointed out that by next Wednesday the second phase of fund allocation will be executed for as many as 95 unaided schools.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, leaders Bhanu Prakash, deputy speaker N Yogish Bhat, Padmanabha Kottari, Kota Srinivas Poojary among others were present.
