Washington, Sep, 4: US president Donald Trump has urged the supreme court to uphold his sweeping global tariffs, filing an appeal in a case that could impact trillions of dollars in international trade and reshape the balance of the world economy.

According to filings reviewed by Bloomberg, Trump’s legal team has asked the court to fast-track the case, seeking oral arguments as early as November. The move comes after a federal appeals court ruled that Trump lacked authority to impose wide-ranging import taxes under a 1977 emergency law intended for national security crises.

Although the filings have not yet appeared on the Supreme Court’s online docket, the urgency of the case underscores its potential consequences.

The financial implications are enormous, making it one of the most consequential trade disputes ever to reach the country’s top court. Bloomberg economics analyst Chris Kennedy noted that if Trump were to lose, the average US effective tariff rate—currently at 16.3%—could be slashed by half. Such a ruling could also compel Washington to refund tens of billions of dollars to importers and jeopardize preliminary trade agreements Trump has brokered with various nations.

For now, the tariffs remain in place as the appeals court temporarily stayed its ruling, allowing Trump time to seek supreme court intervention.
