Mangaluru, Sep 10: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, a grand 11.3-feet tall Yakshagana-style stone idol of Lord Rama, weighing nearly four tonnes, has been installed at the welcome gate of Mangaluru International Airport with the support of Adani Group.

The idol, depicting Lord Rama in the traditional Yakshagana attire of Tulunadu’s rich cultural heritage, has been carved from Krishna Shile, Amrutha Shile, marble, and sandstone.

Renowned sculptor Himanshu Kumar from Bihar, who currently runs Aakruthi Shilpakala at Gurupura-Kaikamba, crafted the idol within 60 days. Known for his expertise in stone artistry, Kumar’s latest work is expected to become a landmark for visitors arriving at the coastal city.

Airport authorities said the installation aims to showcase Tulunadu’s vibrant folk traditions to the world while also offering a cultural welcome to passengers.
