Udupi, Sep 10: Indrali railway station in Udupi district is likely to undergo a name change. Udupi–Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivas Poojary has formally proposed to the ministry of railways that it be renamed as ‘Udupi Sri Krishna Railway Station’.

According to official sources, the MP has already submitted a written request to the ministry, highlighting the cultural and spiritual significance of Udupi, which is globally renowned for the historic Sri Krishna Math. In response, the railway board has sought a comprehensive report from the chairman and managing director of Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) regarding the feasibility and process of renaming.

Located close to Udupi city’s administrative headquarters, Indrali is among the most prominent stations in the district, serving thousands of passengers daily. The demand to rename it has been voiced by locals for several years, who believe that associating the name with Lord Sri Krishna will further strengthen Udupi’s identity as a spiritual and cultural hub.

MP Kota Srinivas Poojary, along with Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna, had earlier visited the station in response to public demands for improved passenger amenities. Following their intervention, several facilities were introduced, while a few additional requirements are still under consideration.

The renaming proposal, if approved, is expected to boost Udupi’s recognition on the national railway map, particularly benefiting devotees and tourists who travel from across India to visit the renowned Sri Krishna temple.
