Tuticorin, Sep 16: A 30-year-old woman was brutally murdered at her residence in Mappillaiyurani, Tuticorin, on Monday, prompting a statewide stir and an intense police hunt for two teenage suspects—one of them the son of a serving head constable.

The victim, Shakthi Maheswari, was found hacked to death with sharp weapons while she was alone at home. She is survived by her husband and two children.

Police said the two teens, including the son of Head Constable Rajendran of the SIPCOT police station, allegedly attacked the woman and fled. Investigators suspect the crime stems from tensions within Rajendran’s family over his alleged relationship with the victim.

Thalamuthu Nagar police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem to the Government Medical College Hospital, Tuticorin. A massive search is on to track down the absconding teenagers.

The incident has shocked the district and comes just weeks after another crime involving police personnel’s children, when the son of a sub-inspector couple allegedly killed his sister’s boyfriend in Tirunelveli.

With state elections due in seven months, the opposition has seized on the case to accuse the DMK government of failing to maintain law and order. The government, citing NCRB data, insists that Tamil Nadu remains one of the safest states and that swift action will follow in all such crimes driven by personal enmity.
