United for a drug-free future: Amit Shah calls for intensified action against narcotics

New Delhi, Sep 16: Union home minister Amit Shah issued a strong call for collective and intensified action against drug abuse during the 2nd National Conference of Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) Heads of States and Union Territories. Emphasizing the long-term threat narcotics pose to India’s youth and future generations, Shah urged enforcement agencies to dedicate at least 12 days each year exclusively to combating the drug menace.

While inaugurating the two-day national conference organized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Shah led discussions under the vision “Drug-Free India @2047”, reaffirming the Modi government’s commitment to eradicating drugs from the country. He revealed that between 2014 and 2025, law enforcement has arrested nearly 70 lakh individuals involved in drug-related offenses.

In a stark comparison, Shah pointed out that drug seizures have seen a massive jump—from 26 lakh kg between 2004 and 2013 to over one crore kg from 2014 to 2025, indicating a four-fold increase in confiscations under the current administration.

“Our nation’s youth is a pillar of our future. If the spread of narcotics isn't checked now, the consequences will be long-lasting and irreversible,” Shah cautioned. “This is a critical time to launch a determined offensive against drug trafficking and abuse.”

Reflecting on progress, the Home Minister noted that after six years of sustained efforts—including strategy sessions, coordination meetings, and information sharing—India has built a robust, multi-layered mechanism to tackle drug-related issues. He also called for leveraging advanced technologies such as drones for detecting and destroying illegal cannabis plantations within one month of sowing.

The conference, themed “United Resolve, Shared Responsibility”, brought together ANTF heads from all 36 states and UTs, along with officials from multiple government departments. The gathering is focused on mapping a clear, coordinated roadmap to achieve a drug-free India.

Throughout the event, participants are conducting in-depth reviews of efforts to curb both the supply and demand of narcotics, assessing the impact on national security, and exploring strategies for harm reduction. The sessions also emphasize the need for a whole-of-government approach, reinforcing that the battle against drugs cannot be won in silos but requires a united front from every sector of governance.
